Child dies in firing, mother injured in Boko

BOKO: A two-year-old child, Arbi Daimary, died on the spot, and her mother Malobika Daimary sustained an injury when bullets fired by Forest officials hit them in the Bondapara area in Boko today. According to the local people, a team of forest officials reached the Bondapara area this evening to push back a herd of wild elephants to the forest. They opened fire in the air, but accidentally two bullets hit the woman and her two-year-old daughter.

After the incident, the local public took the mother-daughter duo to the Boko Primary Health Centre where the doctor declared the baby dead. The mother is now under treatment in the GMCH (Gauhati Medical College and Hospital).

The enraged people of the area blocked NH-17 for an hour as a mark of protest against the incident. The Boko police, West Kamrup DFO Dimpy Bora and Boko Revenue Circle Officer Raj Baruah brought the situation under control. The people of the area had a long altercation with the officers.

The Forest department has not yet made any official statement on the incident. According to sources, the Forest Protection Team of Bamunigaon started firing at the site around 3 pm on Friday to chase the elephant into the forest.

Earlier in the day, the wild elephant injured a boy, Sanjay Das. The boy is under treatment in the GMCH.
