Clause 6 of Assam Accord: Editors Give Roadmap For Constitutional Safeguards

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: Editors of print and electronic media suggested to the high-level committee on Clause 6 of the Assam Accord for ensuring ever-lasting constitutional safeguards on rights over politics, land, culture, language, and employment as well as trade and commerce of the Assamese, indigenous Assamese and other ethnic groups living in Assam.

The high-level committee with its chairman Justice (retd) Biplap Kumar Sarma on the chair heard the editors at the first such public hearing in Assam Administrative Staff College here on Saturday.

Issues like protection of the Assamese language, art and culture, literature etc, were discussed.

Talking to newsmen after the hearing, some of the editors said that many such reports have been sent to the Centre; and now their plea to the high-level committee is to ensure that Saturday’s report does not gather dust. The first duty, according to a few editors, is to stop the government from doing any activity that goes against the Assam Accord. They are of the opinion that the NRC and the CAB (Citizenship Amendment Bill) are diagonally opposite to each other, and the CAB goes against the Assam Accord. The issue of appointment of indigenous people in jobs in the State also came up for discussion.

Meanwhile, the high-level committee is going to hold more such hearings in phases from October 29 to November 2 with various other stakeholders, including the Axam Xahitya Xabha and intellectuals of the State.
