CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stresses need for Assam Medical College upgradation

 Rs 300-cr fund announced on occasion of Platinum Jubilee

DIBRUGARH: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the state government is keen to transform the Assam Medical College (AMC), Dibrugarh into a state-of-the-art research institute responsive to deal with the new-age ailments, and announced a package of will give Rs 300 crore construction of teachers' quarters and students' hostels at Assam's oldest medical college.

Speaking at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the AMC here on Thursday, Sarma said that this premier institute needs to upgrade itself into a state-of-the-art medical institute with adequate thrust on research to deal with critical diseases.

The Chief Minister also asked the AMC to coordinate with the partnership between the state government and IIT Guwahati for high-end medical research.

Paying rich tributes to British philanthropist Dr John BerryWhite and Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi for being instrumental in establishing the AMC, Sarma hailed the AMC for maintaining its rich legacy in medical education and treatment. He asked the medical college authority to ensure its growth and development in synchronization with its green milieu.

Sarma said that 75 years is a long time and during this period, the AMC has produced many doctors who are now leaders in their chosen fields of expertise. Since its establishment, the AMC has been serving humanity, he added.

While congratulating the alumni of the AMC, Sarma expressed his gratitude to alumnus of the 1947 batch, Kamakhya Prasad Chakraborty, who was personally present at the Platinum Jubilee celebration.

He further urged the Vice Chancellor of the Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences to institute an award in the name of philanthropist John Berry White with a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh to felicitate the best MBBS graduate in the state.

Sarma also released a commemorative Platinum Jubilee postal stamp on the occasion.

The Chief Minister also said that State government is committed to provide an advanced, accessible and affordable healthcare-delivery system to all. Therefore, the state government has decided to increase the number of medical colleges in Assam to 24.

The Chief Minister acknowledged the dedicated role played by the AMC during Covid-19 pandemic and thanked the AMC fraternity. He said that because of its unrelenting dedication, several human lives were saved.

Minister of Health and Family Welfare Keshab Mahanta and Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Rameshwar Teli also spoke on the occasion.

Industry and Commerce Minister Bimal Bora, MPs Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Pabitra Margherita, MLAs Binod Hazarika, Taranga Gogoi, Chakradhar Gogoi, VC Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences Dr Dhruba Jyoti Borah, principal of AMC Dr Sanjib Kakoti, Chairman ATDC Rituparno Baruah and a host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
