Lok Sabha Poll
STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI: The ensuing Lok Sabha poll is around five months away, yet the BJP in Assam has made its strategy operational with the target of winning 11 of the 14 parliamentary seats in the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked each of the legislators of the party to ensure the winning of party candidates at least by a margin of 50,000 votes. On the contrary, the opposition alliance I.N.D.I.A. is still disarrayed, with the Congress getting ready to field candidates in all 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state and the TMC seeking five seats from the alliance. The AJP also seeks at least two seats from the alliance.
The entire opposition camp has no clear-cut seat-sharing plan as yet. The AIUDF has sizable vote banks in some of the LAC segments, especially in Nagaon, Dhubri, Darrang, etc. Since the AIUDF is not in the fold of the opposition alliance, I.N.D.I.A., it continues to pose a threat to the block votes of the Congress-led opposition.
For the past few days, the Chief Minister, Assam in-charge of the party, ministers, and MLAs have been holding meetings on the Lok Sabha. According to party sources, the Chief Minister has asked the MLAs not to leave any room for laxity in the Lok Sabha poll. He has made it clear to them that each MLA has to ensure that the party candidates get more votes compared to the last elections. He has given tips to the MLAs and ministers on how to make this happen.
The Cabinet took the decision to make the ministers spend five days and five nights in rural areas in connection with monitoring school education. Sources, however, claim that one of the inherent purposes of this decision is to help the ministers make inroads into the voters in rural and far-flung areas of the state.
The BJP-AGP-UPPL seat-sharing is almost final. Though the AGP sought four seats, the BJP is likely to leave Dhubri and Nagaon seats for the regional ally and Kokrajhar for the UPPL. Keeping pace with the BJP, its allies, the AGP and the UPPL, have also geared up for the Lok Sabha poll.
