GUWAHATI: The Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell will seek the custody of Baghbor MLA Sherman Ali when produced before the court.

At present, Sherman Ali is in the custody of Panbazar Police Station. He got arrested for making some insulting comments against the martyrs of the Assam Agitation.

According to sources, the CM's Special Vigilance Cell will seek the custody of Sherman Ali for grilling him in connection with a case (02/2021) relating to the misappropriation of money from the MLA Local Area Development Fund in Mandia Development Block in Baghbor LAC.

In June this year, the CM's Special Vigilance Cell arrested six people – Mangaldai Zilla Parishad's Deputy CEO Yusufur Rahman (59), junior engineer of Mandia Development Block Ainur Rahman, three presidents of Mandia Development Block Construction Committees — Abdur Rezzak (38), Mujahidur Rahman (35), and Sahjamal Ali (41) – and the then BDO of Mandia Development Block Jadav Choudhury (62).

The CM's Special Vigilance Cell lodged the FIR based on the findings of a regular inquiry conducted by the enquiry officer of the CM's Special Vigilance Cell. The investigating officer found that Rs 25.08 lakh got misappropriated by the officials and staff of Mandia Development Block without executing 14 schemes as per plan and estimate under Baghbar constituency for the construction of roads under the MLA Local Area Development (MLALAD) fund.

A team from the CM's Special Vigilance Cell with the expert team of PWD (Roads) verified all the 14 MLALAD schemes that the construction committees did not execute. The Barpeta Deputy Commissioner constituted the construction committees upon recommendation by local MLA Sherman Ali.

The police said that the construction committees misappropriated Rs 25,08,323 of the Rs 65,00,000 released.
