ADMISSION CRISIS

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Cotton University (CU) has made a 25% increase in intake capacity to admit a maximum number of meritorious students into various undergraduate courses.

Academic Registrar of CU Dr Sanjay Kumar Dutta said that the 25% seats have been reserved for the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) pass-outs amid a crisis of seats due to high pass percentage in Class XII boards this year.

The university has also decided to enrol students from the economically weaker sections (EWS) in 10% seats for the first time.

The much-awaited admission process for various undergraduate (UG) courses in CU started on Tuesday. Registration and filing up of the online applications could be accessed through the CU website www.cotton university.ac.in from September 7. All applicants must generate their Unique IDs on the website of the Director, Higher Education (Link: http://dheonline admission.amtron.in/sp/).

The process of online submission of applications will close at 7 pm on September 16. The CU will publish the provisional merit list of eligible candidates for various UG courses on September 21.

On the other hand, many colleges will start the admission process for various UG courses soon after the State Government has withdrawn its decision to reserve seats for the pass-outs from the AHSEC and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

In August this year, the Higher Education department has issued an official order asking colleges and state universities to exclusively reserve 75% seats for the AHSEC students for admission into UG courses. Only 25% of seats will be reserved for the CBSE pass-outs. The order caused widespread repercussions and protests forcing the Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu to say the board-based seat reservation policy would not be applicable in urban areas where a considerable number of students are from the CBSE.
