Guwahati: Bought Leaf Factories (BLFs) in Dhemaji district were elated at their CTC tea raking in the highest prices among districts in the state in the month of November. The highest average prices for their tea were fetched at tea auctions.
According to the latest information from the Tea Board of India, tea manufactured by BLFs in Dhemaji raked in Rs 245.51 per kg, on average. The second-highest prices were fetched by BLFs in the Sivasagar district, with the price at Rs 228.28 per kg. BLFs in Lakhimpur fetched the third-highest price of Rs 227.20 per kg.
The tea prices realised by other districts in the state (in alphabetical order) are as follows: Biswanath Chariali with Rs 204.54 per kg; Bongaigaon Rs 223.31; Cachar Rs 221.24; Darrang Rs 215.37; Dhubri Rs 198.96; Dibrugarh Rs 219.86; Goalpara Rs 195.63; Golaghat Rs 195.61; Jorhat Rs 217.83; Karbi Anglong Rs 217.59; Karimganj Rs 170; Kokrajhar Rs 180.51; Nagaon Rs 201.62; Sonitpur Rs 204.99; Tinsukia Rs 194.59; and Udalguri Rs 209.45.
BLFs in the Changlang district in the neighbouring state of Arunachal Pradesh fetched Rs 203.31, with those in the West Siang district selling tea at Rs 188.46 per kg, on average.
Darjeeling tea is known for its unique flavour and aroma. However, tea from BLFs in the Darjeeling (Hills) district of West Bengal fetched Rs 169 per kg, while tea from the Darjeeling (Plains) district sold for Rs 171.34 at tea auctions held last month, which were lower than those for Assam tea. Tea from Assam is famous for its distinctive strong, brisk, and full-bodied characteristics.
It should be noted that BLFs do not have their own tea gardens but manufacture tea from green leaf sourced from small tea growers.
