GUWAHATI: The price of diesel increased by around Rs 2 per litre in Assam with effect from Saturday night.
The increase in diesel price is the result of the state government withdrawing the portion of the VAT relief it had provided in 2020. The state government had reduced tax on petroleum products twice in 2020-2021 – which amounted to Rs 5 and Rs 7 respectively.
Official sources said that as on date, the price of diesel is less in Assam in comparison with 17 states of the country. In December, 2020, the state government received tax worth Rs 17.45 per litre of diesel when the retail price was Rs 70.50 per litre. As on date, the government receives tax of Rs 8.47 per litre of diesel when the retail price is Rs 84.94 per litre.
