Dispur facing shortage of Assam Civil Service officers

GUWAHATI: The state administration is facing a crisis of sorts due to a shortage of Assam Civil Service (ACS) officers.

According to government sources, there were 289 vacant posts of ACS officers as on the first part of this month. There are 1,100 sanctioned posts of ACS officers in Assam but only 811 are currently in service. However, this problem is bound to get aggravated as two-three ACS officers achieve superannuation on average per month.

The state government is consequently awaiting the result of the Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) 2020 conducted by the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC). The viva-voce of the CCE 2020 was conducted in June this year. As per tradition of the last few years, results of the CCE examinations are declared ten days or so after the vice-voce interview. However, this could not be done this time because the CCE 2020 is sub judice in the Gauhati High Court and the court has not issued any directive so far regarding announcement of the final results.

As many as 331 posts are involved in the CCE 2020, including 121 ACS posts and 220 allied services' posts. However, even if the results are declared anytime soon, it would take another three-four months before the appointees can report for duty on the field after undergoing induction training.

As such, the sources said that the manpower crisis may continue in the foreseeable future.
