Guwahati: The State Government has asked the deputy commissioners (DCs) to relieve the gaon burhas (village heads) who have crossed 65 years of age. The government has also asked the DCs to fill the vacancies that will lie vacant after relieving the over-aged gaon burhas.

Dispur has noticed that people crossing 65 years of age are also working as gaon burhas in the state. It is illegal. A person attaining over 65 years of age cannot hold the post of gaon burhas, according to standing rules. However, due to ignorance and the district administrations not maintaining any database on the date of birth of gaon burhas, over-aged people are working as gaon burhas in the state. The government pays Rs 9,000 per month as remuneration to a gaon burha.

On behalf of the State Government, its Revenue and Disaster Management (R&DM) Department wrote a letter to all deputy commissioners asking them to relieve the gaon burhas who have crossed 65 years of age. The department asked the deputy commissioners to appoint gaon burhas to fill up the posts that will fall vacant subsequently.

Gaon burhas play a significant role at the grassroots level. They abridge the public-administration gap. The government also delegates some responsibilities and power to the gaon burhas at the grassroots level.
