Dr. Kuladhar Saikia to CM: Take up Issue of Unicode Slot for Assamese Script with Centre

GUWAHATI: Former Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) president Dr. Kuladhar Saikia urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to put pressure on the central government for a separate or independent Unicode slot for the Assamese scripts, besides ensuring other central benefits that the Assamese language ought to get in the aftermath of its categorisation as a classical language.

In a letter sent to the Chief Minister, Dr. Saikia also said, "The Assamese language should be made in sync with the economic sector so as to ensure employment avenues for local youths in various sectors, including government establishments. The use of official language should be ensured in the state. Before long, the government should take measures for the publication of English and other renderings of the oldest Assamese literature."

Dr. Saikia said that all sincere workers of the AXX accepted as their deserving due the congratulations from the Chief Minister soon after the recognition of Assamese as a classical language.

He said that he has given a few suggestions for the development and spread of the Assamese language that have attained the prestigious classical language status by virtue of the works done by many well-wishers, the stalwarts of Assamese literature.
