GUWAHATI: Congress MP and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi assumed charge as APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) president today with the slogan ‘eibar juj hobo’ (there will be a contest this time).
The AICC (All India Congress Committee) appointed Gogoi as APCC president at a time when the forthcoming Assam Assembly election is barely ten months away.
Earlier this morning, Gaurav Gogoi paid a visit to the Kamakhya Temple and paid obeisance there. From there he came straight to the party’s Assam headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan. He took the charge from outgoing APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah in the presence of AICC general secretary and APCC in-charge Jitendra Singh and others.
After that, Gogoi and other Congress leaders attended a meeting at Manabendra Sarma Complex at Dispur Last Gate. All Congress leaders and workers welcomed Gogoi at the meeting.
Speaking at the gathering, Gaurav Gogoi said, “I’ve taken charge as APCC president not for any personal agenda. I’ve assumed this charge to strengthen the Congress in the state. Only ten months are to go for the next Assembly election in the state. The time is very crucial. We can do it if we work every day, right from now. You all need to keep in mind that ‘eibar juj hobo’. And we’ll come out winners.”
Gogoi said, “The remaining ten months will be full of challenges for us. We need to dare the challenges and keep making strides. We need to be ready to be behind bars. Many of us will have fake cases slapped on. There’ll be attempts to taint us. With the blessings of the people, we’ll be able to erase all taints. I came out a winner from Jorhat with the blessings of people. We can’t do anything alone. We need the support of all sections of people. Let people suggest us. We’ll fight for the security of Assam, not for our own interests. Come and join us to show the BJP government the door. All Congress leaders and cadres need to work as a family. I assure you that your efforts won’t go waste. We need to rescue the people of Assam from communal and browbeating politics. We know what patriotism is. We don’t need any certificate from the BJP on it.”
Gogoi further said, “With the party entrusting me to head the APCC, many former Congress leaders, who had deserted us, expressed their willingness to stage homecoming. However, I’ll accord more importance on the opinions of the grassroots Congress cadres. We’ll open the door for our former colleagues if the grassroots workers give the green signal.”
On his X handle, Gogoi wrote,“I want to thank Congress President @kharge ji, CPP chairperson Sonia Gandhi ji, LoP @Rahul Gandhi ji, GSO @kcvenugopalmp for giving me this big responsibility. We will do our best to form a Congress government in Assam in the coming days. I have taken over the responsibility as APCC President from former APCC President @Bhupen K Borah ji today. I am confident that all of us will work together for Assam’s bright future.”
Speaking in the meeting, AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh said, “The countdown of Himanta Biswa Sarma government begins now. The people of the state are ready to topple this government in 2026. However, we need to accomplish the responsibilities vested on us. The BJP government is out to split Assam on religious and communal lines. We all need to team up to topple this government.”
Outgoing APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah said, “I’m with Gaurav Gogoi. I appeal to my party colleagues to be with Gaurav Gogoi.”
