GUWAHATI: Fake passport rackets are thriving in various parts of the State. One such racket was busted two days ago by Hojai police.

In this connection, police arrested three fake passport racketeers from Hojai, Morajhar and Doboka. They have been identified as Kamaluddin, Gausuddin and Abdul Rahman. Police also recovered 25 fake passports, Aadhaar cards and voter cards from their possession. They also recovered laptops and many applications for fake passports.

Sources said the racketeers prepare fake passports and visas for people who want to go abroad for work or studies and they charge a hefty amount for this. These racketeers forge voter IDs and Aadhaar cards and in some cases, they change the photos in the original passports of other people. Such rackets are flourishing in 2-3 other places of the State. Sources added that these racketeers usually target youths in minority-dominated areas who want to go to Saudi Arabia and other countries in search of job opportunities. The police are now probing possible links of such fake passport racketeers with banned outfits and terror groups.

Sources said that the Assam Government had received input from intelligence agencies regarding fundamentalist groups active in the State as well as fake passport and visa rackets which were thriving. It is also a matter of concern and intrigue as to how such fake passport racketeers lay their hands on genuine passports, voters cards and Aadhaar cards of people. The police are interrogating the three arrested racketeers and based on the information they give, the police are hopeful of unearthing a major racket soon.
