Firing along Assam-Arunachal border, This is an act of miscreants: CM

GUWAHATI: A tense situation prevailed in the Dhemaji district today after two people died and three were injured in firing by miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh. The incident took place at Panbari in the Dhemaji district along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

On the occasion of World Environment Day today, some youths of Assam had gone to Panbari to plant saplings. They had sought permission from the district administration. According to sources, while the youths were planting the saplings, some miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh came in vehicles and opened fire at them. A youth named Boga Chutia was killed on the spot while Monitu Gogoi breathed his last in the hospital. Three youths, including Pushpa Gogoi and Akoni Gohain, were injured in the firing. According to local people, three other youths of the area are missing.

The Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Superintendent of Police (SP) of Dhemaji rushed to the incident site and they have started a probe into the incident.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “This is an act of miscreants on account of greed to occupy land. In the Dhemaji district, there are some areas where the border row between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh is yet to be resolved.

“Police are investigating this incident. We must not draw any conclusions in a hurry. I believe that this act was done by a few miscreants, and it is inappropriate to blame a neighbouring state without any evidence.”

Meanwhile, as soon as news of the firing spread, many student organizations staged a road blockade in the Dhemaji district. Local people alleged that such incidents keep happening in the area. They have informed the district authorities but no action has been taken as yet.

State Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu strongly condemned the act of violence in the Panbari area.
