Guwahati: Low visibility due to the presence of a blanket of fog in Guwahati caused disruption of flight services at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA), and as many as 18 flights were delayed on Thursday until the afternoon. Foggy conditions have been prevailing in the city since Wednesday evening.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a cyclonic circulation lies over East Bangladesh and its neighbourhood up to 1.5 km above mean sea level. This is likely to bring rain to a few states in the Northeast.
Regarding the weather forecast over Assam and adjoining states for January 24, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of IMD at Guwahati said, "Light to moderate rain is very likely to occur at a few places over Arunachal Pradesh; light rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, and dry weather is likely to prevail over Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, & Tripura. Shallow to moderate fog is very likely to occur in isolated pockets over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, & Tripura. Light snowfall is very likely to occur at isolated pockets in higher reaches of Arunachal Pradesh. No large change in minimum temperature is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura."
However, the RMC has issued a warning in the NE region for Friday, January 24, which states, "Thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh. Dense fog very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur & Tripura."
As for the weather forecast for Guwahati city on January 24, the RMC has predicted the possibility of fog or mist in the morning and a partly cloudy sky later in the day.
Regarding the delay in flight services, a statement by Guwahati International Airport Limited issued on Thursday afternoon said, "Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA), Guwahati, witnessed inclement weather conditions due to fog on 23 January 2025. Due to this, 18 flights were delayed till now. LGBIA has deployed airport personnel across the terminal to support passengers and provide them with necessary assistance. As part of our commitment to passenger safety and comfort, LGBIA has also made provision for additional seating and water for passengers. We request passengers to connect with their respective airlines and check the schedule before arrival at the airport. The safety and well-being of our passengers, employees, and partners remains our top priority."
