Foreign particles in mineral water jar
STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has issued notice to the Bisleri mineral water manufacturing unit in Silchar in a case pertaining to detection of foreign particles in a 20-litre jar of Bisleri mineral water.
A writ petition (WP(C)/1728/2023) had been filed in Gauhati High Court where the petitioner stated that he had detected some foreign particles in a 20-litre jar of Bisleri mineral water. This was brought to the notice of the authorities concerned by filing a complaint as per Section 40 of the Food Safety Standard Act. The jar was sent to the Food Analyst to the Government of Assam, State Public Health Laboratory for examination and the report confirmed the allegation of the petitioner.
The petitioner further stated that the Designated Officer, Food Safety hid the analysis report and after one year informed the Deputy Commissioner that legal action cannot be taken against the violating company on the pretext that the mandate of the rule was not followed. So the petitioner filed the writ petition seeking a high-level inquiry.
According to the analysis report, the sample showed presence of foreign substances, namely dead fly and few suspended fibres inside resulting out of inappropriate processing. The sample, stated the report, “cannot be regarded as clean and wholesome as required by Food Safety and Standards Regulations. “Hence, the sample has potential deleterious effect on human health if consumed and is unsafe according to Section 3 (1) (ZZ) of Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006.”
The court has issued a notice to the Bisleri mineral water manufacturing unit in Silchar; the Designated Officer, Food Safety; the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar; and the Commissioner, Food and Drug Administration to the Government of Assam, Department of Health and Family Welfare, to respond to the writ petition.
