SILCHAR: The Badarpur GRP arrested two Ukrainian citizens from Badarpur Railway Station last night.

GRP arrested the duo from the Delhi-bound Tripura Sundari Express on Thursday night. The GRP identified them as Trishehynskyi Volodymyr (39) and Nazarii Voizniuk (21). The Ukrainians claimed that they had entered India in February last, and they were returning from Agartala and heading for Delhi. However, they could not produce their passports. They said that they had lost the documents.

The incoherence of their versions was enough to make the police suspicious. Moreover, the police found a few Bangladeshi currency notes in their belongings.

Meanwhile, a Bangladesh news report of June 2019 said the arrest of six Ukraine nationals in Dhaka. They were involved in ATM robbery. The photograph carried with the news report showed the pictures of those two nabbed in Badarpur.

Sources said that the two Ukrainians were in Bangladesh jail for more than two years, and they finally could sneak into India. But how the two foreigners could cross the border without a passport is a clear pointer to the porous India-Bangladesh border.

Karimganj police sources hinted that high officials would arrive very soon to interrogate the two Ukrainians. The police are contacting the Ukraine embassy, the sources added.
