Guwahati: Classes for the first batch of MBBS students in Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College & Hospital in Guwahati will start in September 2025. The classes will be held on the campus of the ESIC model hospital at Beltola in Guwahati. Talking to The Sentinel, Dean of the ESIC Medical College & Hospital, Prof. Dr. Sanjay Keshkar, said, “The National Medical Commission (NMC) inspected the campus on July 2 this year. The approval letter is awaited, and we are supposed to get it by the end of the month. The admission process for the first batch of MBBS students, comprising 50 seats, will start in August. Classes for the academic session 2025-26 are scheduled to start from September.”
ESIC Medical College & Hospital at Guwahati is the first medical college of ESIC in the Northeast region. The Ministry of Labour & Employment gave approval to the college in 2024.
“The ESIC model hospital in Beltola is presently a 100-bed one. Initially, it was a 50-bed hospital. In view of the rush of patients at the hospital, the Ministry of Labour & Employment decided to upgrade it to a 220-bed hospital in 2020, with the construction of a new building for the purpose. The new building is almost complete and will be completed in September this year. The criteria for declaring a medical college hospital is that the hospital should be a 220-bed one,” he said.
Dean Dr. Sanjay Keshkar further said, “Prime Minister Modi announced in 2024 that 75,000 new medical seats will be created over the next five years. To fulfil the PM’s promise, all ministries and state governments started to work towards this goal. The Ministry of Labour & Employment also decided to upgrade 10 ESIC hospitals in the country into medical colleges. The ESIC model hospital in Guwahati was also selected for the upgrade, as it met the criteria.”
“The Assam government has allocated 35 acres of land in the Sonapur area to set up a new campus of the ESIC medical college & hospital. A 600-bed hospital, along with a medical college on the lines of the AIIMS, will be set up there, with nursing colleges. The new campus is to be established within a period of five years. When it is operational, the 220-bed ESIC model hospital at Beltola will be turned into a super-speciality hospital,” he added.
