GUWAHATI: The hailstorms that lashed 132 villages in upper Assam last night damaged around 4,500 kutcha houses, affecting around 18,000 people. Regional Metrological Centre has sounded a yellow alert in the entire Northeast. It said that sporadic thunderstorms and lightning might occur in the region.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has instructed the officials to assess the damage caused by the hailstorm and extend all possible help to the affected people.

The hailstorm affected 67 villages in the Dibrugarh district and damaged around 1,225 kutcha houses partially, 58 villages in the Charaideo district and damaged 2,967 kutcha houses partially, four villages in Sivasagar and damaged 220 kutcha houses partially, and three villages in the Tinsukia district and damaged 22 kutcha houses partially.

According to official sources, though they have not received any report of human and livestock casualty, the hailstorm damaged many schools, Anganwadi centres and standing crops. The hailstorm damaged around 172 hectares of standing crops in the Dibrugarh district alone.
