Guwahati: Indian tea manufacturers garnered better prices for their tea at auctions in the calendar year 2024, as compared to the prices in 2023. Significantly, tea prices rose by more than Rs 30 per kg.
This fact came to light in a recent report by the Tea Board of India on the month-wise prices of all tea sold at Indian auctions in 2024. According to the report, the average price fetched at tea auctions from January to December 2024 was Rs 198.76 per kg. Of this, tea manufacturers of the North India zone got a price of Rs 224.51 per kg on average, while those of South India fetched Rs 128.73.
In 2023, tea from across the country fetched an average price of Rs 168.43 per kg. Thus, the price of Indian tea in auctions increased by Rs 30.33 per kg on average when compared to the prices fetched in 2023.
Again, tea from Indian manufacturers fetched Rs 229.99 per kg in September, which was the highest price in a month in the calendar year 2024.
It should be mentioned here that the price fetched by tea manufacturers in the country in the month of January 2024 was Rs 135.15 per kg on average. In February, the price fetched was Rs 118.87; in March it was Rs 115.51; in April the price was Rs 174.22; in May Rs 192.58; in June it was Rs 219.19; in July the price was Rs 216.78; in August Rs 223.04; in September Rs 229.99; in October Rs 226.43; in November Rs 208.88; in December the price fetched was Rs 180.65 per kg, on average.
Tea from Assam is included in the North India zone. Tea auctions in the state are conducted in the Guwahati and Jorhat auction centres.
