Is Karimganj used as a corridor by drug mafias?

SILCHAR: A question has come to the fore for the simple reason that despite all-out war by Karimganj police, drug mafias and peddlers continue to find leeway to smuggle in drugs and contraband goods. SP Padmanath Barua has gone on record to say his commitment to breaking the backbone of drug mafias. Is there something wrong within the police force itself or the smugglers have become desperate, knowing well their fate to be consigned to jail?

The passage that the smugglers follow to smuggle in is the Mynamar-Mizoram route, dodging past security check-posts to make an entry in Karimganj. The drive against such clandestine business by police started six months back and to date crores of rupees of drugs have been impounded and smugglers put behind the bar. Not a day passes without any report of smuggling. Smugglers adopt various methods to hoodwink the law-enforcing agencies to smuggle in and out drugs, phensidyl , Burmese betel nuts and cattle.

In the recent drive, the check-post at Vetarbond under Ratabari police station got third successive success when the alert and vigilant guards during routine check detected yaba tablets valued at Rs 3 crore. In charge of the check post, Nurul Amin Barbhuiya along with constable Nurul Amin guards Shankar Kumar Nath and Altaf Hossain detained an Inova car and found the yaba tablets. From the car was taken into custody Burhan Uddin. Four others introduced themselves as passengers from Aizawl.

Burhan Uddin is a notorious drug smuggler who had been carrying the packets of yaba tablets from Aizawl to be delivered at Nilambazar. O/C of Ratabari police station Ratan Das brought Burhan Uddin, the seized drugs and the car. His interrogation divulged some vital information that would help the police to reach the bottom of the drug business for reoriented drive and action. Citizens and political leaders have to think over the menace seriously to save the young generation.
