GUWAHATI: A team of Guwahati Police, on Sunday, arrested the proxy candidate involved in the scam during the JEE (Mains) examination held at the Ion Digital Zone at Borjhar on September 5.

The police nabbed Pradip Kumar (34 years) from a location in New Delhi. The proxy candidate appeared in place a candidate — Neel Nakshatra Das from Guwahati. Significantly without appearing in the examination, Neel topped the list of successful candidates from Assam. By scoring scored 99.8%, he also secured an all-India rank.

Meanwhile, Guwahati Police Commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta informed the media here on Sunday, "A team of Guwahati Police led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP-West) Suprotiva Lal Baruah picked up the proxy candidate, Pradip Kumar from the New Delhi address that we had found during the course of our investigation. He was brought to Guwahati on a transit remand on Sunday evening. He will be produced before the Court here on Monday. We are carrying out further investigations with the information supplied to us by Neel. Pradip Kumar could appear in place of Neel with the help of the persons who have been already arrested in this connection."

The beans of the scam were spilled following an FIR (First Information Report) filed by Mitradev Sarma on October 23 after an audio clip of Neel went viral in the social media. A case (624/2020) in this regard was registered at Azara Police Station. The proxy candidate was arrested one month after the FIR was filed. Neel has got bail.
