GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) held a discussion under the aegis of the North East Students' Organization (NESO) on Thursday regarding the fallout of the recent firing incident at the inter-state border in Karbi Anglong.

The students' unions appealed to both the state governments to provide security to citizens in view of the apprehensions and sense of insecurity among residents of Meghalaya staying in various parts of Assam, as also residents of Assam staying in various parts of Meghalaya.

The AASU and KSU further demanded that people living in border areas of both states should be taken into confidence by the governments of Meghalaya and Assam before they arrive at a final decision in connection with the ongoing bilateral talks to resolve the border dispute.

Meanwhile, after a gap of two days, the Assam Police on Thursday allowed heavy vehicles, including trucks carrying essential commodities, to enter Meghalaya from Assam. However, entry of private vehicles into Meghalaya from the state still remains prohibited. Simultaneously, some vehicles carrying stranded people from Assam entered Guwahati under escort of the Meghalaya Police.

ANI adds: Tension gripped Meghalaya's capital Shillong after miscreants torched a traffic booth and attacked three police vehicles, including a city bus, on Thursday evening.

The incident took place during a candlelight vigil organized by some groups to protest against the violence on the Assam-Meghalaya border on November 22. According to reports, the protesters hurled stones and petrol bombs at police forces deployed to control the situation.
