GUWAHATI: The State Government signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to set up a Rs 2,000-crore joint venture for processing 10 lakh litres of milk daily through six new milk processing units in seven years. The venture is to benefit over 1.75 lakh dairy farmers of the state and increase their earnings.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Minister of Animal Husbandry and Dairy Parshottam Rupala and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Chief Minister termed the day as historic which will transform the dairy sector in Assam. The MoU would herald a new era of rural economic development by augmenting dairy sector development and generating livelihood opportunities. The CM said, "Over the years we were importing eggs, fish, milk, pigs etc., from other states. This drains out a huge amount of cash from the state benefiting the farmers in other states. Our people should change their mindset and engage themselves in all such sectors. That will make us self-reliant."

Under this MoU, two cattle-feed and organic manure manufacturing units would be set up, besides the import of high-yielding cattle breeds and artificial insemination.

The programme also laid the foundation stone of the expansion project of Purabi Dairy. It would increase its production capacity from 60 to 150 thousand litres per day (TLPD).

Union Minister Rupala said, "The NDDB has been managing West Assam Milk Producers' Cooperative Union Ltd (WAMUL) since 2008. At present WAMUL stands as an exemplary model of a successful dairy cooperative. Over the years, WAMUL has grown from strength to strength in ensuring a round-the-year remunerative market to its associated dairy farmers. WAMUL is able to achieve sales of around 73,000 litres of packed liquid milk and milk equivalent of products every day under its registered brand name Purabi."
