Guwahati: The national highway (NH) network in the Northeast has been expanded to 15,071 km from 9,734 km in the past 11 years, except in the state of Meghalaya. The highest expansion of NH is seen in Arunachal Pradesh, with 2,340 km expanded. In the period from March 31, 2014, to June 30, 2025, Assam saw an expansion of 443 km in the NH network.
This was revealed in a recent report from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). According to the report, as of March 31, 2014, the extent of the NH network in the Northeast was 9,734 km, which has now been expanded to 15,071 km as of June 30, 2025. The expansion in NHs is thereby calculated to be 5,338 km.
In March 2014, the NH network in Arunachal was 2,027 km, which has now been expanded to cover a distance of 4,367 km, which accounts for an increase of 2,340 km.
In the case of Assam, the NH network covered 3,634 km in March 2014. This has been expanded to 4,077 km in June 2025, thereby accounting for an increase of 443 km.
As for Sikkim, an increase of 581 km in the NH network was witnessed in the past 11 years. In March 2014, the network of NHs was 149 km. This has now been increased to 730 km.
On the other hand, Manipur had an NH network of 1,452 km in March 2014. Now, with an increase of 388 km, the NH network covers 1,840 km.
In the past 11 years, Mizoram got an expansion of 277 km in the NH network. Earlier, the network covered 1,222 km, and now the NH network covers 1,499 km.
In the state of Nagaland, the NH network covered 741 km in March 2014. Now, until June 2025, the state has seen an extension of 929 km of NHs, with the network covering 1,670 km.
Also, Tripura in the past 11 years saw an expansion of 380 km in its NH network. In March 2014, the NH network amounted to 509 km, and now it has become 889 km.
According to MoRTH, the length of the NH network across the country has been expanded from 91,287 km in March 2014 to 1,46,342 km at present.
The central government receives proposals from various state governments/UTs from time to time for the declaration and upgrading of state roads, including state highways (SHs), as new NHs. Decisions are taken based on the broad principles of the declaration of NHs, the requirement of connectivity, traffic density, inter-se priority, and synergy with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (NMP)
