GUWAHATI: The third wave of COVID-19 appears to be less severe than the previous two waves and most of the people infected by the virus have reported mild symptoms. Hospitalization in the ongoing third wave of the pandemic is less so far as compared to the first and second waves.

Talking to The Sentinel, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Principal Dr Achyut Chandra Baishya said, "Till today evening, there were more than 400 patients under GMCH. We are monitoring the cases daily and we have observed that the severity is less and most of the patients have mild symptoms." He further said that in the last two waves, patients admitted needed immediate ICU care and oxygen supply. But this time, most of the patients admitted so far are above 60 years of age with comorbidities, he said and added, "As people getting infected are suffering from mild symptoms, they are opting for home isolation."

Dr Baishya further said, "There is no need to panic. However, people must be cautious as the virus may change its character at any time. Also, those who have not yet taken vaccine must get themselves vaccinated."
