GUWAHATI: “Not an inch of land of the Charaideo Maidams- be it in the buffer zone or the core zone- will be given for settlement under Mission Basundhara 2.0,” said State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan.

News was doing the rounds that under Mission Basundhara 2.0, some people may be given settlement rights to land of the Charaideo Maidams. This invited sharp reactions from cross-sections of people in the Sivasagar and Charaideo districts. But minister Jogen Mohan has clarified that there will be no settlement of any land of the Charaideo Maidams.

Talking to The Sentinel, the minister said, “Some people living near the Charaideo Maidams have applied for land settlement under Mission Basundhara 2.0. The system of geotagging has been introduced under Mission Basundhara 2.0 and as per the rule, geotagging has been done against these applications also. But this does not mean that land settlement rights will be given to the applicants.

“The State Government has specified that land under the core zone and buffer zone of the Charaideo Maidams will not be given for settlement. If the Subdivision Land Advisory Committee (SDLAC) erroneously recommends giving land settlements rights to any plot of land of the Charaideo Maidams, the government will reject the recommendation. The Charaideo Maidams have a long and glorious history. They are an integral part of Assam’s culture and heritage. This year, the Charaideo Maidams are India’s lone nomination for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. A UNESCO team will be visiting the Charaideo Maidams in August-September this year. The Assam Government will not take any step that will affect the chances of the Charaideo Maidams being included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.”

The minister further said that the Assam Government was leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the Charaideo Maidams get the UNESCO World Heritage Site tag. “Recently, I visited the Charaideo Maidams with my cabinet colleague Keshab Mahanta to inspect the ongoing beautification, exploration, conservation and preservation works at the Charaideo Maidams.
