Guwahati: The investigation into singer Zubeen Garg’s mysterious death has entered a crucial phase, with Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Rupkamal Kalita spending his second day in the joint custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

According to sources, the SIT had urged the court for a 14-day remand to facilitate a detailed interrogation of Kalita, but the magistrate permitted only a seven-day custody. Investigators are expected to question him further on the events that took place in Singapore, where Garg tragically drowned last month.

Kalita, who lives in Singapore and is associated with the Assam community there, had reportedly been among those present during the fateful yacht party attended by the late singer. He was summoned to appear before the SIT earlier this week and was taken into custody for further questioning after what officials described as “inconsistent responses” during his preliminary round of interrogation.

Officials close to the probe said Kalita’s testimony is significant because he is one of the few witnesses with direct knowledge of the events leading to Garg’s death. His statements could help the investigators piece together the sequence of events and verify the accounts of others who were also at the gathering.

Meanwhile, the SIT continues to widen its probe, examining both personal and financial links connected to Garg’s associates. Investigators are also said to be analysing money transfers and digital evidence that may shed light on the circumstances surrounding the singer’s final days.

The state government has maintained that the investigation will remain transparent and impartial, amid growing public attention and political back-and-forth over the handling of the case. The CID and SIT are expected to submit a detailed report on Kalita’s interrogation once the remand period concludes next week.

As the probe deepens, pressure mounts on the investigating agencies to bring clarity to one of Assam’s most high-profile and emotionally charged cases in recent memory.
