GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has put on hold the payment of over two lakh Orunodoi beneficiaries after a door-to-door verification.

A few months ago, the State Government observed that the financial condition of some beneficiaries of the Orunodoi scheme improved. So, the government took a policy decision to verify any uplift in the economic condition of the beneficiaries of the scheme through a door-to-door verification drive. The drive is complete now.

Based on the report of district-level monitoring committees, the government put on hold the payment of over two lakh beneficiaries on the ground that their economic condition improved in the past few months. The government has not yet taken the final decision to delete their names from the list of Orunodoi beneficiaries.

Earlier the government announced that in the event of the deletion of names from the list of Orunodoi beneficiaries, it would include new eligible beneficiaries in the list.

Orunodoi is one of the prime women-centric flagship programmes of the State Government. The Assam government has been transferring Rs 1,250 as a monetary benefit to the bank accounts of economically weak women on the 10th of every month under the Orunodoi scheme. The government launched the programme in October 2020 It initially entailed Rs 830 per month.

There were over 19 lakh beneficiaries – all women – under the scheme.
