Guwahati: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today hinted that the Panchayat election in the state is likely to be held at the end of April or the first part of May this year. He also stated that the election date will be announced immediately after the Class XI exams.

Talking to the media, the CM said, “The Class XI exams will conclude on March 28 or 29. At any time after the exams are over, the date of the Panchayat election will be announced. The election process will take around one month to be completed. If the election is declared on March 30, the election process will be completed by April 30. The poll process will continue even during the time of Bohag Bihu.”

The CM’s statement indicates that the Panchayat poll in the state is likely to be held by the end of April or the first part of May.

The Panchayat election will be conducted by the Assam State Election Commission, and the declaration of the poll schedule will also be done by it. In view of the upcoming polls, the Commission has already published the final electoral rolls. According to the electoral rolls, the total number of electors in the state is 1,80,14,913. Of this, male voters number 90,60,640, female voters 89,53,865 and 408 from the third gender.

The Panchayat election is the largest poll exercise in the state compared to the general election to the Lok Sabha and state Assembly, involving all the local bodies in rural areas. The Panchayati Raj system in Assam is a three-tier affair at the Gaon Panchayat, Anchalik Panchayat, and Zilla Parishad levels. The number of Gaon Panchayat members is 21,920, the Anchalik Panchayat 181, and the Zilla Parishad members number 397 at present.

Panchayat polls are not held in 6th schedule areas and municipal areas. The elections are held across 27 districts in the state.
