GUWAHATI: The number of theft and robbery cases is increasing in the city, revealed a report by the Guwahati Police. Despite the COVID-induced lockdown during most part of 2020, the year saw a steep rise in crime cases as compared to 2019 and 2018 under Guwahati Police Commissionerate.

According to the data, a total of 5,847 theft cases were registered under the Guwahati Police Commissionerate in 2020 as compared to 4,234 and 4,328 theft cases registered in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

The Guwahati Police Commissionerate has under its jurisdiction three Police Districts, namely East, West, and Central.

In 2020, the East Police District reported the maximum number of 3,674 theft cases. The six police stations (PS) under the jurisdiction of East Police District are: Dispur PS, Basistha PS, Bhangagarh PS, Hatigaon PS, Sonapur PS, and Khetri PS.

On the other hand, the Central Police District registered 1,126 theft cases in 2020. The following nine police stations are under the jurisdiction of this Police District: Chandmari PS, Noonmati PS, Geetanagar PS, Pragjyotishpur PS, Panbazar PS, Paltan Bazar PS, Latasil PS, All Women PS Panbazar, and Satgaon PS.

The least number of theft cases were registered in West Police District during 2020. As many as 1,047 theft cases were registered in the following five police stations of this Police District: Jalukbari PS, Bharalumukh PS, Gorchuk PS, Fatasil Ambari PS, and Azara PS.

The number of robbery cases also saw a surge during the year as compared to 2018 and 2019. While a total of 760 cases were registered in 2020, a total of 465 cases were registered in 2018 followed by 654 cases in 2019. Of the total robbery cases registered in 2020, a total of 543 were registered under the East Police District.
