GUWAHATI: The storm over the SI (sub-inspector) recruitment scam in the State lashed the Assam Assembly on Monday when Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia insisted on an inquiry into it either by a sitting judge or the CBI to delve deep into the fiasco.

Raising the issue during 'Question Hour', Saikia said, "We are not at all satisfied with the CID's inquiry into the SI recruitment fiasco that has let off a number of big fishes. The names of a number of politicians did figure in the list of people involved in the scam. Why are those names missing in the charge sheet? This is why we insist on an inquiry into the scam by a sitting judge or the CBI."

In his reply, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said, "At the instruction of the Chief Minister, the CID has investigated the scam and submitted the charge sheet. Charges have even been framed against SP-level officers, and this is an indication that the investigation by the CID is fair enough.

"In fact, this is not a scam at all. The examination was stopped 15 minutes after the detection of the leakage of the question paper. The examination has been conducted afresh and the results declared."

Contesting the claim of Patowary, the Opposition members said that the list of people involved in the episode included a number of political leaders. Cash was also recovered in huge amounts. "Why doesn't the charge sheet include the names of those political big fishes? We're not at all satisfied with the investigation conducted by the CID," maintained the Opposition.
