GUWAHATI: Some foreign countries are trying to disrupt peace during the festival season in Assam, Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said here on Saturday.

"We have intelligence inputs that some foreign countries have cast their evil eye on Assam. We have put our forces at maximum alert," Mahanta told media persons here.

"However, our police force is ready to foil all such attempts of the enemy. It is a crucial time. We urge all sections of people to maintain peace during the festival season," the DGP said.

"I have also held a video conference with SPs and commandants to review the security situation," the DGP added.

Clarifying his stand on Rajkanya Baruah's hit-and-run case, the DGP said that the GNRC surgeon Dr Navanil Barua had called him over the phone on October 4 before the model got arrested.

During interrogation on Friday, Dr Baruah has confessed that he had admitted the accused model into the semi-intensive care unit (ICU) after he made a phone call to the DGP in that regard.

"Yes! I talked to him over the phone on October 4. Then he asked me whether the police are going to arrest her. When I said yes, the doctor informed me that she had a self-hunt tendency. I told him that we would keep that in mind. But there was no discussion on whether she was in ICU," Mahanta said.

During interrogation, Dr Baruah claimed that Rajkanya Baruah had sent him a WhatsApp message allegedly threatening to commit suicide on the hospital premises if he fell short of admitting her to ICU.

The DGP admitted that a loophole on the junior cadres of the police in dealing with the case let Rajkanya get bail.

"I have taken up the case with a senior official of the City Police. I also discussed the matter with the Special DGP (Law and Order). Later, we advised the city police officer in this regard," he added.

"Many accidents are taking place in different parts of the state. But the DGP or the Special DGP need not take up all these cases. The junior officers deal with such cases," Mahanta further said.

"It was a homicide. I talked to a senior officer of the City Police. I also referred to a section under which he has to deal with the case. But he had not done what I expected. So I issued a show-cause notice seeking his explanation. Later he submitted his explanation, and we are satisfied with his reply," he added.

"We are also taking action against the officers for their mistakes at the initial investigation of the case. We have to correct our mistakes," he added.
