Southwest Monsoon Arrives Early in Northeast

GUWAHATI: The Southwest Monsoon has advanced into the Northeast. It reached parts of Mizoram, some parts of Manipur and Nagaland on May 25, 2025. It reached Kerala on May 24, 2025, against the normal arrival of June 1. With this, the onset of the monsoon is likely to be advanced in Assam and other parts of the Northeast.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Guwahati of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a press note on the monsoon today. According to the note, the Southwest Monsoon has advanced into some more parts of Mizoram, some parts of Manipur, and Nagaland today. The northern limit of the monsoon passes through 15.5°N/55°E, 15.5°N/60°E, 16°N/65°E, 16.5°N/70°E, Devgad, Belagavi, Haveri, Mandya, Dharmapuri, Chennai, 15°N/83°E, 18°N/87°E, 20°N/89°E, Aizawl, Kohima, 26.5°N/95°E, and 27°N/97°E.

Conditions are favourable for further advance of the Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of northeastern states during the next three days.

According to the IMD forecast, fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty wind speeds reaching 30-40 km/h are likely over Northeast India during the next 7 days. Isolated heavy rainfall likely over Arunachal Pradesh on the 25th, 26th & during the 29th-31st, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during the 25th-31st May, with isolated very heavy rainfall likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on the 28th & 29th and over Assam & Meghalaya on the 30th & 31st May.

RMC also predicted likely moderate rain at most places over Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram; at many places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Nagaland; and light to moderate rain is very likely to occur at a few places over Tripura on May 26.

It issued a warning of a likely thunderstorm and lightning, accompanied with gusty winds reaching up to 30-40 km/h at isolated places over Manipur and Mizoram on May 26.  Thunderstorms and lightning are very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura on May 26. Heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram on May 26.

In the past 24 hours till 8.30 am on May 25, the chief amount of rainfall recorded in Assam is 6 cm in Diphu, 2 cm each at Borpathar, Gelabil, and Lanka, and 1 cm each in Hatsingimari, Bongaigaon, Silchar, and Bihubar.

The advanced arrival of the Southwest Monsoon to India (eight days before the normal date) this year is after 2009, when it reached Kerala on May 23.
