GUWAHATI: More security forces will be required from the Centre for smooth conduct of the forthcoming Assembly polls in the State. The number of additional forces will depend on the phases in which the Assembly polls will be conducted, informed Police sources.

Meanwhile, keeping in view the current law-and-order scenario, the 2016 Assembly elections and also the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in the State, the Assam Police has already prepared a plan. According to the preliminary analysis, the State might need the maximum number of approximately 1,400 additional companies of security forces. Currently, the State has 100 companies of CAPF (Central Armed Police Force). A company of the security forces comprises 100 personnel.

However, the actual number of additional security forces will be ascertained only after the declaration of poll schedule by the ECI. Then, the Assam Police will inform the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) about its requirement.

Following the approval of the ECI (Election Commission of India), the State government has already appointed Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) Deepak Kumar Kedia as the Nodal Officer (Security) for the polls. The full ECI team also reviewed the security scene during its recent visit to the State. The ECI also discussed with the MHA the vital issue of security arrangement connected with free-and-fair polls in New Delhi recently.
