 Philanthropist Ratan Tata unable to attend award function

GUWAHATI: The Government of Assam will confer the highest State civilian awards to an array of personalities from diverse fields on Monday.

Philanthropist and industrialist Ratan Naval Tata will be conferred the Assam Baibhav award. However, Ratan Tata and Dipak Chand Jain – who will be conferred the Assam Saurav award– will not be able to attend the award function on Monday. In a letter to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Tata wrote, "I greatly appreciate and am deeply touched by the decision of the government of Assam to bestow on me the Assam Baibhav Award for the year 2021.

I have been an admirer of your personal commitment to the wellbeing of the Assamese people and it is therefore an exceptional honour to receive this award.

Thank you for understanding my inability to personally receive the award at the function to be held in Guwahati on January 24 and for your willingness to present it to me at a later date in Mumbai."

The Assam Baibhav, Assam Saurav and Assam Gaurav Awards, 2021 will be given away by Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi in presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra auditorium. The Assam Saurav award will be conferred on five personalities – Prof Kamalendu Deb Krori, Dr Lakshmanan S, Prof Dipak Chand Jain, Lovlina Borgohain and Neelpawan Baruah. The Assam Gaurav award will be bestowed on 13 personalities.

The Assam Baibhav award will carry Rs 5 lakh and a citation, the Assam Saurav award will carry Rs 4 lakh and a citation, and the Assam Gaurav award will carry cash Rs 3 lakh and a citation. Due to COVID restrictions, a limited number of people have been invited to the award function.
