GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today appealed to all not to be content with jnan (knowledge) alone but to strive for prajna (wisdom), which he termed the highest state of learning. In achieving this, the guidance from a guru is indispensable, the Chief Minister added.

The Chief Minister attended as chief guest at the centrally-observed Teachers' Day celebrations by the Department of Education at Shrimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Auditorium in Guwahati.

Stating that any learning, irrespective of the duration and the intensity, is incomplete without the guidance of a guru, the Chief Minister termed the teacher a path-pradarshak (a guide).

Invoking the Shastra literature, the Chief Minister referred to the teachers as moral and spiritual guides through whom the disciples are reborn as inhabitants in the ocean of knowledge.

Drawing a distinction between siksha (education) and jnan (knowledge), the Chief Minister said that both complement one another, and learning is not complete without considerable hold over both.

Terming education as the most valuable wealth, the Chief Minister said that a man is not complete without being adorned by it. He appealed to the teachers to reach out to those in need of their margdarshan so as to lead a meaningful, knowledgeable life.

Speaking on the National Education Policy 2020, Sarma exuded confidence it would prove decisive in building the India of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision in days to come. He added that the government of Assam took every step necessary for NEP-2020 implementation in letter and spirit. The decisions on amalgamation and merger of government schools have been taken keeping in mind the demands and requirements of NEP 2020, the Chief Minister said. These and other decisions, he said, would ensure Assam would be counted as one of the most advanced states in the country on all parameters in days to come.

The Chief Minister also handed over the 'State Awards' to 22 teachers teaching at secondary, upper primary and lower primary levels, selected for the year 2022.

Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu lauded the teaching community for the yeoman's services they have been providing, terming them the backbone of the education system, a press release said.
