Surjya Hazarika elected as new Axam Xahitya Xabha president

GUWAHATI: Filmmaker and publisher Surjya Hazarika was elected as the new president of the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) for the term 2023-2025 on Friday, while Girish Handique was elected as the vice president and Upendrajit Sarma was elected as the secretary-general. The results were announced after counting of votes during the executive meeting of the AXX in Nalbari.

Hazarika secured 335 out of 734 votes cast by members of various AXX branches, while Handique secured 342 votes and Sarma secured 315 votes.

The newly-elected office-bearers will assume office at the ensuing session of the AXX at Narayanpur. It may be mentioned that the process for election of the new top office-bearers has been going on for over a month.

The contesting candidates for the post of the AXX president were Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi, Surjya Hazarika, Dr Jagadish Patgiri, Prahlad Chandra Tasa and Nahendra Padun. The candidates vying for the vice president's post were Girish Handique, Dhiren Sarma, Dr Basanta Kumar Sarma, Ganesh Chandra Nath and Gobinda Talukdar. The candidates for secretary-general were Debojit Bora, Anup Kumar Barthakuri, Upendrajit Sarma, Jadav Chandra Sarma and Romanandan Bora.
