Take civic body polls seriously: Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Assam BJP

GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has asked the Assam BJP to take the municipal and autonomous council elections in the state seriously to ensure 100 percent success.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State BJP president Bhabesh Kalita had a meeting with Shah and BJP's national vice president-cum-Assam in-charge Baijayant Jay Panda in New Delhi last evening. They discussed municipal and autonomous council poll strategy and other issues.

Talking to The Sentinel today, Bhabesh Kalita said, "We fought the 2021 Assembly poll seriously. The outcome was quite impressive. Along with the Municipal poll, the Thengal Kachari Autonomous Council (TKAC) and the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) polls are likely in the first part of 2022. While the municipal election will cover urban voters, the two autonomous council polls will cover urban and rural voters. It's something like a mini Assembly election. From that point of view, the Union Home Minister has asked us to take these elections seriously to ensure 100 per success."

When asked about a possible alliance with other political parties, as was the case in the last Assembly election, Kalita said, "We didn't have any discussion on this issue with Shah. We, however, do not want to stitch any alliance with other parties in this series of local body polls. These polls are related to the grassroots-level people. The outcome of such polls will let us gauze our strength. If at all there is an alliance that will be limited to a municipal level only."

The state has 81 municipal boards, the elections of which are due since March 2020. The election authorities could not hold the poll because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The term of civic bodies and autonomous councils is five years.
