Tea Exports Spurt but Imports Decline: Tea Board of India

GUWAHATI: Exports of tea from India have spurted in 2024, but the country has witnessed a fall in the import of the beverage.
According to statistics of the Tea Board of India, the country has exported 167.82 million kg of tea from January to August 2024 to various countries. During the same period in 2023, the country exported 136.74 million kg of tea to various countries.
This year, the North India Zone exported 96.19 million kg of tea till August 2024. The exports of Assam and West Bengal teas are calculated in the North India Zone. During the same period this year, the South India Zone exported 71.63 million kg of tea. The country exported tea at an average rate of Rs 262.77 per kg (unit price).
On the contrary, India has imported 11.39 million kg of tea from other countries from January to August, 2024. During this period in 2023, India imported 14.71 million kg of tea from other countries. The statistics given by the Tea Board have not mentioned the countries from where India imported tea.
However, the report mentioned the quantity of tea that India imported since 2019. In the calendar year 2019, the nation imported 15.85 million kg of tea, 23.79 million kg in 2020, 26.51 million kg in 2021, and 29.84 million kg in 2022.
