GUWAHATI: The State Government decided to start MBBS courses in three new medical colleges and hospitals in the state in 2023. The three medical colleges are Nalbari Medical College & Hospital, Nagaon Medical College & Hospital and Kokrajhar Medical College & Hospital.

The state has nine medical colleges and hospitals operational now. The last medical college that became operational in the state was Dhubri Medical College & Hospital. It has 100 MBBS seats allowed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in 2022.

State PWD is doing the civil construction works of Nalbari Medical College & Hospital, Nagaon Medical College & Hospital and Kokrajhar Medical College & Hospital. Over 90 per cent civil works of these three medical colleges are over. The State Health Department has started the process for the recruitment of faculty members of three new medical colleges to meet the schedule of the academic session. The department is racing against time to complete the recruitment process before an inspection by the NMC. According to NMC guidelines, faculty inspection should precede NMC inspection. NMC may inspect more than once.

According to sources, the State government will apply before the NMC for allotting 100 MBBS seats in each of the three new medical colleges. The existing nine medical colleges in the state have a cumulative strength of 1,200 MBBS seats. It will be a record in the state to open three medical colleges in the same academic year.

Health Minister Keshab Mahanta visited the three new medical colleges with top officials of Health, PWD and district administrations several times to speed up their construction works. The minister visited Nagaon to review the construction works of the medical college there yesterday.
