GUWAHATI: A division bench of the Gauhati High Court has asked the State Government to submit details of the action taken report from State Government pertaining the allegation of illegal encroachment of Tipam Hill in the Tinsukia district.

Regarding the illegal mining going on in the historic Tipam field as well as the incidents of encroachment on the Tipam hill area, Late Nilay Dutta, a senior advocate, had written a letter drawing the attention of this Court to such events, based on which, the present suo motto PIL (3 of 2018) was registered. The Court did request reports from the authorities concerned.

The Court said, “There are reports dated December 17, 2022, and February 20, 2023, submitted by the jurisdictional Divisional Forest Officer. A perusal of the reports shows that the incidents of illegal mining have since been stopped due to the intervention of the departmental authorities. What is, however, not clear from the materials on record is whether any action has been taken by the district administration or revenue authorities pertaining to the allegation of illegal encroachment on Tipam Hill.”

The State Government sought six weeks’ time, and the Court granted that.
