JORHAT: One person was arrested and a juvenile was picked up on Wednesday in connection with the stabbing of three students of Jorhat Institute of Science and Technology (JIST) near the institute under Lahdoigarh police outpost in the district on Tuesday night. A case number 248/22 under sections 279, 307, 34, 341, 326 IPC has been registered in Teok Police Station.

All three students - Suraj Debojit Deori, Raktim Roshan Gogoi and Partha Pratim Hazarika, studying in the fifth semester undergraduate (BSc) course in Physics- have been admitted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Partha Pratim has undergone surgery and is admitted in the ICU of the hospital.

Lahdoigarh police outpost in charge Diganta Kumar Nath said that Papu Payeng, a resident of Majulu, and a juvenile had been arrested from Gohain Tekela Gaon in Jorhat, while the third person, Siddgartha Bora, elder brother of the juvenile, was yet to be caught.

Nath said that the incident took place at about 9.10 pm when four students of the college were returning to their hostels after having dinner at a dhaba at Chenijan nearby. Nath said that as per the complaint lodged at the outpost, the four were standing on the road by the side of the institute when a vehicle drove past at high speed. The four jumped into the ditch by the side of the road to avoid being hit.

Nath said that the vehicle thereafter stopped at a kiosk selling betel leaves and areca nuts. Two of the four students accosted those in the vehicle for driving rashly and an altercation took place. Thereafter, the two students came back, following which the car returned to where the four were standing on the road and another altercation took place and the students were attacked with a knife by the occupants of the car. Three students received injuries on the neck, back and stomach. Two of the injured students reside in private hostels and one in the college hostel.
