GUWAHATI: The fifty-four non-exempted union ministries and departments have spent 35 percent of their budgetary allocations for the development of the northeastern states in the first seven months of the financial year, 2024-25. This has necessitated the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) to request the union ministries and departments to speed up their utilization of funds for the development of the Northeast. This information has been revealed in an office memorandum of DoNER issued on December 13, 2024.

The central government has a standing notification that the fifty-four union ministries and departments will have to spend at least ten percent of their gross budgetary allocations for the development of the northeastern states.

According to the office memorandum, a review meeting of the mandatory allocation and utilization of 10 percent Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) for the North Eastern Region (NER) by all 54 non-exempt ministries/departments in FY 2024-25 was held under the chairmanship of the Minister of State, MDoNER, on November 29, 2024. As of October 31, 2024, the total expenditure under the aforesaid initiative is 35 percent. The ministries/departments, as well as the state governments, have been requested to speed up the pace of proper utilization of the funds and resolve the minor issues with mutual consultations.
