GUWAHATI: The Electors’ Verification Programme (EVP) — both online and offline — has received a massive response from electors in Assam. Launched for the maiden time across the country by the ECI (Election Commission of India), the programme ended on November 18. Though the process had failed to evoke the required response at the initial stages, it, however, picked up momentum towards the conclusion stage. Around 2.20 crore voters used the opportunity while about 55 lakh electors applied for data corrections with respect to names, date of birth, and other information. Meanwhile, verification of the electors’ data is going on and the process will continue till November 30. The District Election officers are monitoring this process.

Considering the large number of participants in the programme, the ECI has deferred the date for publication of draft photo electoral roll. As per the revised schedule, the integrated draft electoral roll will be published in Assam on December 16, 2019. It will be prepared based on the electors’ verification programme.

Meanwhile, the ECI has in letters issued to the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all States and UTs (except Haryana, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir and NCT of Delhi) stated, “The Commission has reviewed the progress of EVP and observed that large numbers of forms received for inclusion/deletion/correction, are yet to be disposed of before draft publication. The Commission has also received requests from some CEOs for more time to complete the remaining work.

“Keeping in view the position stated above, the Commission has decided to extend the period for completion of EVP and accordingly change the schedule of SSR (Special Summary Revision), 2020” as follows: There will be another scope for corrections from December 16 (Monday), 2019, to January 15, 2020 (Wednesday) when claims and objections will be taken up. Disposal of the claims and objections will be completed by January 27, 2020 (Monday). Preparation of supplements will be completed by February 4, 2020 (Tuesday). The final publication of the electoral roll will be on February 7, 2020 (Friday).
