Barpeta is a township in the Barpeta district/region and a headquarter. The official languages of Barpeta are Bodo, Assamese, Bengali. There are many schools and colleges in Barpeta and it forms a part/structure of Barpeta Lok Sabha Constituency. The nearby towns/cities to Barpeta are Bongaigaon, Pathsala, Nalbari etc and the nearby villages are Majgaon, Sarupeta, Geruapara, Datirbori etc. Barpeta is also the gateway/doorway to one of the National Parks of Assam called as, Manas National Park.

In the 2016 Assembly Election, AGP candidate Gunindra Nath Das won the MLA seat, with 63563 votes and became MLA, whereas a candidate from INC A Rahim Ahmed was the runner-up with 57753 votes. Therefore he lost the MLA seat by 5810 votes.
