MANGALDAI: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and Assam Sate Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) have expressed dissatisfaction over the poor role of the District Child Protection Officer, Darrang in the sensational rape and murder of a minor girl who was kept as a child labour in the rented house of a SSB jawan at Dhula on June 11.
Rupali Banerji Singh, Member Secretary of NCPCR, Dr Sunita Chang Kakati, chairperson of ASCPCR, and Khanindra Buzarbaruah, Member, ASCPCR, while coming to know from media persons that not a single officer of the office visited the house of the victim minor till date, the office bearers of the Commission expressed utter surprise. They also nullified the claim before the media by Pallavi Sarma, an officer of the district child protection office, that they "have no role after the death of a minor".
The office bearers of the Commission also ruled out receiving any action taken report by the district office in this regard and also observed to make a 'suo motto' inquiry in this regard. The NCPCR and ASCPCR office bearers were addressing a press conference at the Mangaldai district library auditorium on Thursday afternoon in connection with the grievance redressal camp held under the aegis of the district administration in the same site earlier on the day.
Significantly, neither the District Child Protection Officer, Manjit Das nor his deputy Pallavi Sarma were available at the time of the press conference. Meanwhile, in the press conference ASCPCR chairperson Dr Sunita Changkakati informed the media persons that in the mega grievance redressal camp, altogether 893 child rights-related grievances, including sexual harassment cases have been recorded for redressal. She further informed that Darrang is the third district in the State after Goalpara and Barpeta where such camps are organized.
