Diphu: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday described Assam as “a bouquet of flowers” where people of different religions, castes and ideologies coexist, and said the Congress believes in empowering such diversity through decentralised governance.
Addressing a rally in Karbi Anglong district, Gandhi said real power should lie with the people and every section of society must have a role in running the country.
"Assam is a bouquet of flowers, in which people of different religions, castes, and ideologies live. The Congress's thinking is—real power should be in the hands of the people of Hindustan, every class should get participation in running the country," he added.
Gandhi also said Article 244(A), brought in by the Congress, reflects the party’s vision that Assam should not be governed from Delhi or even Guwahati, but by its own people.
He further added that the party would implement the provision if voted to power in the state.
Drawing a contrast with the BJP, Gandhi alleged that the ruling party favours centralised control and seeks to run Assam from Delhi.
He also accused the BJP of corruption, claiming that large tracts of land in the state have been handed over to corporate houses in exchange for financial gains used in politics.
Gandhi said the Congress is committed to protecting the rights of the people of Assam and ensuring their participation in governance.
