Centre Considers Computer-Based NEET-UG, Supreme Court Seeks Responses

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the petitioners, including the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), to file their responses to the Centre's affidavit stating that it is actively considering shifting the NEET-UG examination from the current pen-and-paper format to a computer-based test.

A Bench comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe posted the matter for further hearing on August 19.

In its affidavit, the Centre informed the court that it is examining the possibility of conducting NEET-UG in a computer-based format, either as a single-stage examination or through a two-stage model similar to the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main and Advanced.

The government also told the court that it has initiated a comprehensive overhaul of the NEET examination process to prevent paper leaks and address systemic shortcomings.

During the hearing, counsel for FAIMA submitted that if the examination is to be conducted in a computer-based format, the decision should be announced at the earliest so that students get sufficient time to prepare under the revised pattern.

The Bench said it would consider all aspects of the matter and directed the parties to submit their replies and suggestions before the next hearing on August 19.
