Guwahati: Today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), issued a 24-hour heavy rainfall warning for Guwahati and adjoining areas, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and spells of rain that could disrupt normal life.

As per the advisory issued at 8.30 am, the city is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall of up to 6 cm over the next 24 hours, while isolated areas may record heavy rainfall ranging from 7 cm to 11 cm. The warning will remain in effect until 8.30 am on 9th August .

The rainfall could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpasses, disrupting traffic and increasing travel times on key roads. Reduced visibility during intense spells may further affect road safety.

The IMD also warned of possible temporary disruptions to power and municipal services. Ferry and boat operations could be affected, while strong winds and saturated soil may result in fallen trees. Landslides and mudslides are also possible in vulnerable hilly areas.

Guwahatians have been advised to monitor weather updates, follow traffic advisories and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly through waterlogging- and landslide-prone areas. During thunderstorms, people have been urged to seek shelter in safe locations.
